Orffyreus, or Johann Ernst Elias Bessler, to give him his real name, invented a machine in 1712, which he claimed was an example of perpetual motion. Despite some 20 years of testing and examination by scores of famous and infamous people - scholars, nobility, lord and ladies, professors and artisans, no one ever found any evidence of fraud. Even so, he is regarded as a having duped all of his investigators simply on the grounds that such machines are impossible therefore it must have been an imposition.
Certain discrepancies in the legend intrigued me and over a number of years I researched the life of this man and became convinced that he was innocent of these accusations. My research was written up and published in a book entitled ‘Perpetual Motion; An Ancient Mystery Solved?’ The title was intended to convey the probability that such a machine had once been invented, and the question mark was included to throw in the possibility of doubt - now however, my research since the publication of this book has confirmed to my complete satisfaction that Johann Bessler (aka Orffyreus) was genuine and he did build a wheel which ran endlessly, subject of course to normal occurrences such as wear and tear.
The machine derived its energy from gravity, according to the inventor, and as such, I believe that it did not fall within the requirements of a perpetual motion machine. These are defined as needing no access to any energy external to themselves. Bessler’s machine did of course tap the endless supply of energy available from gravitation, which was of course external to the wheel itself.
